Costa Rica

Uncover a world of dense jungles, azure oceans and humpback whales. Holidays here were once ecoforest-lodge-only, but now infinity-pooled extravaganzas abound.

For nature lovers, look for the red-furred howler monkeys in Mal Pais, hike to wonderful waterfalls, ride horses with cowboys, discover beautiful beaches, get up close to an active volcano in Arenal Volcano National Park, go bird watching and see the colourful keel-billed toucans in Cloud Forest in Monteverde, visit the Jaguar Rescue Centre which looks after orphaned or injured big cats, hang out at the Sloth Sanctuary, go whale watching, or slip into some natural hot springs in La Fortuna.

For the more adventurous, Costa Rica has a wide array of activities try. Find world-class surfing at Puerto Viejo, ride the rapids on the Rio Pacuare, zipline through the rainforest of Rio Perdido, or take a few days out to test your stamina with a climb to the summit of Cerro Chirripo, Costa Rica’s highest mountain.

The hardest decision you may have to make on your Costa Rican trip is which beach to relax and play on. For golden sands and activities like surfing, kayaking and mountain biking, try Playa Cocles. For nightlife, go to Guanacaste for a drink or two. For some delicious Costa Rican coffee, visit the café in Alajuela owned by Maria Auxiliadora Bonilla, champion barista.
